COOPERATION BETWEEN SARS AND THE TEXTILE FEDERATION

18 JUNE 1999

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the Textile Federation met on 17 June 1999 to discuss areas of cooperation to improve effective tax administration with regard to imports and exports of textiles. The textile business is faced with the threat of illegal imports, which seriously undermines the viability of the industry. One of the areas already receiving attention is the exchange of information, which will lead to more effective targeting of illegal consignments and transactions. The overall goal of these initiatives is intended to improve tax morality within the industry. The textile federation has already provided training for SARS officials at two major seaports and as a result of the improvement in effectiveness it has been agreed to extend these courses to other points of entry as well. The industry also has acknowledged an improvement in customs effectiveness over the last few months and envisages a closer working relationship with SARS in future.
