Past

Matriculated from Parktown Boys' High School. Graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a BCom and a BAcc. Passed the Public Accountants and Auditors Board Final Qualifying Examinations at my first attempt. Admitted as a Chartered Accountant after completing my articles with Pim Goldby (now Deloitte).

Joined the Department of Finance: Inland Revenue as an assessor in the company assessment division of the Receiver of Revenue: Johannesburg in August 1990. Appointed to the internal positions of section manager and assistant director in February 1992 and January 1993 respectively. Transferred to the newly created Corporate Tax Centre in March 1994 where I became divisional manager of one of the four corporate assessment divisions.

The centre was officially opened by the then CEO, Piet Liebenberg, on 25 October 1996. Appointed as a director at the Corporate Tax Centre on 1 April 1998.

Present

Seconded to the Commissioner's office on 1 September 1999 as acting Manager: Tax Research. Formally appointed to this position on 1 September 2000. Appointed as Assistant General Manager: Legislation - comprising customs policy, legislative drafting, international treaties, and tax research - on 1 December 2001. Appointed as General Manager: Legislative Policy on 1 December 2006, now Group Executive: Legislative R & D. Spent a year on secondment as a policy analyst at the OECD's Centre for Tax Policy and Administration in 2013/14. Elected as co-chair to the OECD's Working Party 6 on the Taxation of Multinational Enterprises in 2014 and re-elected in 2016. Stepped down in June 2019 and was succeeded as co-chair by Matthew Gbonjubola of Nigeria.
