SARS EMPLOYEE ARRESTED FOR CORRUPTION

A 31-year old SARS employee appeared before the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court this morning on charges of fraud and theft.

Kadima Mulenda was arrested by SARS anti-corruption unit and the South African Police Services (SAPS) last week for fraudulently obtaining refunds.

Mulenda is suspected of having submitted fraudulent tax returns and effected nearly R300 000 worth of fraudulent refunds since January this year. Further transactions are still under investigation.

Steps have been taken to strengthen the human resource and business systems to eradicate fraud.

Mulenda has been remanded in custody and will appear again at the Pretoria Regional Court on the 8th June 2004.
