I would like to advise that Mr. Trevor van Heerden, the Commissioner for the South African Revenue Service will take leave of SARS with effect from 31 August 1999. Mr van Heerden joined the Inland Revenue Service on 20 August 1962. Clearly, he has had a long and distinguished career in Government, particularly in the Revenue Service.
He has indicated a willingness to be available in an advisory capacity on an as needs basis, an offer we are likely to take up.
Mr van Heerden's intention to resign has been shared with President Mbeki, who has since been in communication with him. The President, on behalf of all of us in Government, expressed his sincere appreciation to Mr van Heerden for the extraordinary services rendered.
The President has regretfully accepted Mr van Heerden's decision, and wishes him the best for the future.
The vacancy created by Mr van Heerden's departure will be advertised shortly.
TREVOR MANUEL
MINISTER OF FINANCE
