MEDIA RELEASE NUMBER 13 OF 2001

23 FEBRUARY 2001

NOT ALL SORGHUM FLOURS ARE SUBJECT TO DUTY INCREASES

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) today said it had come to its attention that there was uncertainty about which sorghum flours to which duty increases would apply.

The Minister of Finance, Mr Trevor Manuel, announced in his Budget speech that sorghum beer and sorghum flour duties would be raised by 5%.

SARS said as a result of the Minister's announcement some retailers had started increasing the prices of all sorghum flours, including maltabela.

"As noted in the formal Budget proposals tabled by the Minister, he was referring to preparations based on sorghum flour used for making beverages," SARS said.
