South Africa will host for the first time the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators' (CATA) Conference scheduled to take place during the week of 1 - 6 December 2002 in Somerset West, Cape Town. The Minister of Finance, Mr. Trevor Manuel will open the conference that will be attended by more than 100 of the most senior tax representatives of 47 Tax and Customs Administrators.
This Association of Tax Administrators was established by the Commonwealth of Finance Ministers in 1977 to promote the improvement of tax administration in all its aspects within the Commonwealth with particular emphasis on developing countries.
This conference will focus on imparting knowledge on a wide spectrum of topics that will inter alia include challenges facing tax and customs integration, lessons learned around changing business culture and technology and tax and public service reforms.
Announcing the conference, The Commissioner for the South African Revenue Service Mr Pravin Gordhan said: "It is indeed a privilege for me and my colleagues at the South African Revenue Service to host this prestigious event. All of us at SARS are looking forward to share our experience and to learn from the experiences of other tax administrations."
