PRETORIA - February 7 2001 - The South African Revenue Services (SARS) today announced that it had no plans to release the names of its customs officials, who are alleged to be involved in fraud or corruption.
Customs GM Mr Vuso Tshabalala said SARS was busy with intense investigations into duty and tax evasion activities and the findings of these will be made public once they have been concluded.
"If a person is arrested for any criminal activity, he or she appears in court and the details of the crime, including the name, become public information. As matters stand, we cannot release any name of anyone until that person has been charged," Mr Tshabalala said.
