SOUTH AFRICAN REVENUE SERVICE
MEDIA RELEASE NUMBER 23 OF 2000

6 OCTOBER 2000

SARS ACTS SWIFTLY TO AVERT NATIONAL STRIKE

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) this afternoon reached an agreement with the Public Servants Association (PSA) on wage negotiations, thus averting strike action due to start on Monday.

During the negotiations in Pretoria today, the management of SARS offered a six percent salary increase backdated to July 2000 and another two percent with effect from January 2001.

The agreement means that PSA members will report for duty on Monday.

At this stage the second union with members at SARS, NEHAWU, is still consulting with its members on the latest offer from SARS.

The organisation would like to inform the public that all services offered by SARS will be provided as always.
