SOUTH AFRICAN REVENUE SERVICE
MEDIA RELEASE NUMBER 42 OF 2001

6 SEPTEMBER 2001

JOINT STATEMENT BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN REVENUE SERVICE AND SHOPRITE CHECKERS

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) and Shoprite Checkers (Pty) Ltd wish to advise that Shoprite Checkers voluntarily submitted to an audit of aspects of its importation business as part of a cooperative approach to compliance by business and SARS.

The investigation by SARS’ forensic auditors in conjunction with the retailers' auditors, PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc, focused on whether Shoprite Checkers met its obligations regarding custom duties and VAT.

The investigation could not find evidence of any irregularities or non-compliance with the requirement of both the VAT Act and the Customs and Excise Act as it affects the retailer’s importation business.

This audit on Shoprite Checkers is in line with an undertaking by retailers to support a compliance campaign by SARS aimed at combating any form of tax and duty evasion in the industry.
