The first meeting of the recently appointed South African Revenue Service (SARS) Advisory Board, was held on Thursday, 4 December 1997.
Convened by the Minister of Finance, the Board held a briefing session and received an overview of the present situation in SARS, as well as the goals and objectives set to ensure thorough-going transformation, maximising the new opportunities provided by administrative autonomy.
The Board is appointed in terms of the SARS Act which granted administrative autonomy to the Revenue Service. It forms an integral part of the steps taken by Government to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of revenue collection. The Board functions are, in terms of the Act, directed at monitoring, evaluating and assisting in the improvement of the administration of the revenue collecting system and to see that SARS operates effectively. The Board's mandate does not include tax policy matters.
