SARS REMINDS TAXPAYERS WITH TRAVEL ALLOWANCES TO RECORD ODOMETER READINGS

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is reminding taxpayers with travel allowances to read their mileage counters at the end of business on Monday February 28th, recording the distance driven during 2004/5 for entry into 2004/5 Tax Returns.

As this is the final day of the 2004/5 tax year, it will help taxpayers to accurately fill in their logbooks which will then enable them to claim precisely for travel allowances. The submission date for tax returns, which was recently announced, is 8 July 2005. Tax returns will reach individual taxpayers as from the middle of March.

"The 2005 Filing Season campaign will kick off as of 1 March and we hope it to be as effective as last year's," says SARS Spokesperson, Sechaba Nkosi. "This year the campaign will focus even more on taxpayer education to assist taxpayers to complete and submit accurate returns."

"We will also be communicating key deadlines and submission dates timeously as part of this year's campaign. We hope this will encourage taxpayers to submit their returns early, to avoid a rush close to deadline, which could lead to unnecessary logjams."

Nkosi added: "As SARS we remain committed to help taxpayers in an effective and efficient way to fulfil their obligations."
