MAN ARRESTED FOR CELLPHONE FRAUD

A 39-year old businessman was today refused bail pending further investigation by the Kempton Park Magistrates Court following his appearance on charges related to the violation of Customs and Value Added Tax (VAT) laws.

Ahmed Bohrat was arrested by the police at his house earlier today following an investigation by the criminal investigation arm of the South African Revenue Service.

Bohrat was charged with fraud in respect of under-valuing imported cellular phones in a suspected bid to avoid paying about R1-million in custom duties.

He was remanded in custody and will appear again on 19 November 2003.
