MINISTRY OF FINANCE
MEDIA RELEASE
26 OCTOBER 1995
EXTENSION OF THE TAX AMNESTY

To co-incide with the announcement of the reform process of South Africa's Revenue Services, the Minister of Finance also announced today that the tax amnesty would be extended until January the 31st 1996.

Of late there has been a pleasing increase in the number of people registering as taxpayers, and the enquiries continue to come in. However, campaigns surrounding the local government elections took some of the focus off the tax amnesty campaign. It was also felt that many possible candidates had not registered because of a lack of understanding of the process, and that the extension of the amnesty period would allow for a more client-friendly registration method to be devised.

The work that has gone into and will now continue on the reform process of the revenue services will also put the service in a better position to act on tax avoidance once the amnesty period has expired.
