SARS: CUSTOMS & EXCISE TO RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM (H M CUSTOMS & EXCISE)

SARS: Customs & Excise is receiving continued support from the United Kingdom Government. During the past 11 months, 11-16 delegates from HM Customs & Excise have assisted SARS in the generation of an additional R150m in revenue from additional customs duty, VAT and penalties in the Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town areas. They have also assisted in improving the method of seizing goods and improving compliance.

A new delegation, 12 team members, from HM Customs & Excise arrived in South Africa on 16 August 1997 to support SARS.

The focus of this phase is directed at the transfer of skills to enable local Customs & Excise Offices to review procedures and methodology.

This national project, under the auspices of the Commissioner: SARS was presented to the Deputy President, Mr Thabo Mbeki.

Teams have been established in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The aim of the team is to successfully complete this phase by the end of February 1998.
