MEDIA RELEASE NUMBER 27 OF 2001

21 JUNE 2001

A JOINT PRESS STATEMENT BY SARS, PSA AND NEHAWU

The South African Revenue Service (SARS), the Public Servants Association (PSA) and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) today agreed to a protocol which will regulate the roll-out of the revenue service's re-engineering programme, Siyakha.

The parties said the agreement was a key milestone in the transformation of SARS.

"The agreement is significant because it represents a joint commitment to transforming SARS in a socially responsible way into a model public sector organisation," the organisations said.

The agreement is the culmination of seven months of intense consultations between the three parties. They said while there had been occasional disagreements during the consultation process, those were managed successfully because of the Partnership status enjoyed by the unions.
