SOUTH AFRICAN REVENUE SERVICE
MEDIA RELEASE NUMBER 15 OF 2001

8 MARCH 2001

A JOINT STATEMENT BY SARS AND ELLERINES

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) and furniture retailer Ellerines announced today that the retailer voluntarily submitted to an audit of aspects of its importation as part of a cooperative approach to Compliance by business and SARS.

The investigation by SARS' forensic experts in conjunction with representatives from Grant Thornton, Kessel Feinstein, a firm of chartered accountants, centred on whether Ellerines met its obligations regarding custom duties and VAT.

The investigation found that the furniture retailer was fully compliant with SARS' requirements.

The audit is in line with a recent undertaking by retailers to support a compliance campaign by SARS to stem tax and duty evasion in the industry.

The two organisations expressed hope that the other players in the industry would follow the example set by Ellerines.
